For the year 2021, Radio 1’s Big Weekend will take place online for the second year owing to the global pandemic situation.

The four-day live music event will take place between May 28 and 31. It will be streamed on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds.

Although the UK has imposed various restrictions, BBC announced that the event has been formulated for everyone to enjoy with their loved ones in pubs, beaches, parks, or from the comfort of their own homes.

They have arranged for about 50 new live performances that have been recorded exclusively for the event.

They have still not released the lineup but said that the artists are some of the biggest musical acts out there.

They will also be featuring upcoming artists alongside the lineup which will be announced in the coming weeks.

Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Greg James says, “I’d hoped everything would have been back to normal by now, to be honest. But as we’ve been doing for the last 12 months, we’ll be making the May Bank Holiday as fun and entertaining as possible with Big Weekend 2021. We’ll keep doing what we can to thank our listeners and support the artists that have helped make the last year easier to manage.”

For the year 2020, Big Weekend also played out virtually which took place just a few months after the UK went into its first official lockdown after the outbreak of the virus.

Some of the artists who were among the line-up for last year included Sam Smith, Jonas Brothers, Ellie Goulding, Aitch, AJ Tracey, Mabel, and Niall Horan.

Other music festivals such as Glastonbury and Download who usually happen during the early summer months in the UK have also been canceled the second year in a row.

Other festivals might take place later in the summer months as may have rescheduled their dates.
