After the pandemic, the biggest thing that hit the United States is the recent ongoing civil unrest. The world has been witnessing the chaos as thousands of civilians have taken over the streets, protesting against the American government and institutions resulting in one of the most massive movements in American history.

Though the movement started as a protest against the murder of George Floyd at the hands of four police officers in Minneapolis, it has quickly escalated to become the mouthpiece of racial equality against the racial discrimination that has been going on for decades.

Even though the world has not seen the desired reaction from the American Government at this highly sensitive matter, the gaming world has set an example by availing their utmost support on social media defending the peaceful protests.

Though the gaming community is much pleased with the event, still they could not help but point out some flairs of hypocrisy from various gaming developers including Blizzard. While Blizzard shows their support in this matter on Twitter by expressing their belief, that human rights should be stood up for, their previous attempt to suppress the voice of the pro-Hong Kong activists in their platform says otherwise. The gamers all over the world have called out the company on their double-standard. And not just Blizzard, many developers have been accused of delivering their support only to appeal to their target player base.

Amid these farce of supports, some gaming companies like Rio Games have been investing real effort to get involved and help the situation beyond mere words. The developers have taken the twitter expressing their plans. They wrote that with the joint effort between their social impact fund, Diversity and Inclusion team, and Riot Noir (their employee resource group for Black employees), their approach towards the perpetual commitment will be thoughtful and deliberate in choosing organizations that can help make meaningful, sustainable change.

Not stopping at just a few words of support, Riot Games will be donating a fund of $1,000 per Riot employee, and to a variety of different charities and non-profits, and the Black community directly. The followings will receive the help:

  • Local communities with a focus on black-owned businesses
  • Nationwide criminal justice reform
  • Longer-term solutions for systemic change to address racial bias

Thankfully Riot Games is not the only one on the list presenting a thoughtful solution to the matter. Many have joined the cause giving back to the community. Matthew Mercer and the rest of the Critical Role Company have played their part by donating to the cause.

The recent police brutality has unmasked the ongoing racial discrimination that has plagued the United States for decades. The protests signify people’s frustration with the longterm cruelty, racism, and bigotry. They are now standing up for their rights aiming to establish an impeccable impact on society. It is incredible how the whole country has come together on the streets forming a remarkable unity, demanding justice and equality from the government despite the devastating pandemic to witness the end of the injustice.
